The producers of the original production of Billy Elliot the Musical have launched a nationwide search for children to play the roles of Billy, Michael and Debbie in a new run of the multi-award-winning show.

With the dates, location and full details of the production’s upcoming run to be revealed at a later date, the open casting call is aimed at boys aged nine to 14 and girls aged nine to 12.

Launching the talent search, casting director Jessica Ronane said: “We are delighted to be starting a new nationwide search to find our next generation of boys to play Billy Elliot. Following in the footsteps of some of the most beloved stars whose careers were launched by this extraordinary production.”

Boys hoping to win the roles of Billy and Michael should be under five foot tall with unchanged voices. Possessing tap and ballet experience would be a ‘bonus but is not essential’. Girls hoping to play Debbie should have ballet experience and must be from the North East of England.

Youngsters can access the audition application form and choose the city where they wish to audition at billy@jessicaronane.com.

Anyone hoping to apply for any of the other child roles (who must be based in Greater London) should also email billy@jessicaronane.com.

Based on the 2000 movie which told the inspirational story of the dancing schoolboy from a northern mining town played out against the turbulent backdrop of the 1984/1985 miners’ strike, Billy Elliot the Musical is brought to life by the multiple award-winning team of writer Lee Hall (book and lyrics), director Stephen Daldry, choreographer Peter Darling and Elton John who composed the show’s score. The production features scenic design by Ian MacNeil, the associate director is Julian Webber, costume design is by Nicky Gillibrand, lighting design by Rick Fisher and sound design by Paul Arditti. Musical supervision and orchestrations are by Martin Koch.

The show has been seen by over 10.5 million people across five countries, winning more than 80 theatre awards internationally including ten Tony Awards and five Olivier Awards.
